Family Island is a bright, cartoonish game that lets you help a family survive on a tropical island. Gather resources, build structures, and upgrade your infrastructure to make a thriving villa in your remote island.
Family Island is a game that's all about resource management. In Family Island, you help a Pixar-esque 3D family that has recently moved to a deserted island. In order to accomplish their goals, you'll guide them through the process of gathering resources, constructing buildings, making tools, and more. As you progress through the game, you'll make advanced structures and enable the family to cook exotic dishes and automate some of your gathering tasks.
In many ways, Family Island is an unremarkable, polished freemium game. If you've played any free-to-play game with an energy system in the last decade, you'll immediately recognize visual, sound, and gameplay elements used in Family Island. The cartoonish characters, bright colors, and vibrant buttons help you feel right at home, but they also make it feel like you're not playing a very original game.
In terms of gameplay. Family Island doesn't just use an energy system. Instead, it's designed around it. While other games make you wait to play, Family Island is all about gaining energy through in-game resources, buildings, and tasks. You can then use this energy to harvest other resources, construct tools, cook food, and make buildings. In some ways, the fact that energy is a resource that you can manipulate and interact with makes Family Island feel more fair and engaging than other games. On the other hand, the fact that it's so in-your-face makes it difficult to ignore the ways in which this game tempts you to spend money.
Just like other freemium games, Family Island produces revenue for the developer by constantly dangling small temptations in front of you. It takes time and in-game energy to gather resources, cook food, build buildings, and perform your other tasks. With a small payment, you can purchase boosts to the resources you need to accomplish your goals. This probably doesn't seem very appealing at first, but when you need just a little bit more to make your big goal for the day it's incredibly tempting to drop a few dollars.
So is the game fun? At first, progressing the story is quick, with characters providing detailed instructions on how to make steps towards progressing within the game. As you get farther along, however, steps become more complicated. You'll need to perform long, complex processes, like gathering resources to make intermediate materials that you then process in buildings to make advanced materials. Each upgrade or new construction will take lots of time because of both the steps involved and the actual time required for the build.
This means that as you progress, the fun of the game is about anticipation and reward. You'll feel good about mastering the more complex build systems, figuring out how to efficiently gather new resources, and sticking to a schedule. When your current goal is complete, you'll get to reap the rewards and enjoy your upgraded, more efficient base. On the other hand, these upgrades will be few and far between as you advance in the game, and there will always be a bigger thing to build once you've completed your current project.
Family Island is all about tapping on resources to collect them, navigating menus to find the thing you want, and memorizing the game's more complicated systems. The strategy involved has to do with resource management, efficiency, and building the right thing at the right time. If you're interested in those mechanics, Family Island might be worth checking out. On the other hand, since many free-to-play games use a similar system of mechanics, don't feel bad for abandoning Family Island for a game with an artstyle or gameplay that appeals to you more. There are plenty of other islands in the sea.

How To Play

As you might have guessed, Family Island is quite similar to other freemium games in terms of progression and rewards. This means that your first and biggest priority should be to log in every day and quickly take all of the free stuff you get for logging in. Family Island has a pretty generous daily login reward that can add up fast, so try not to miss days. Once you're in-game, grab everything that's replenished and quickly run through your basic crafting tasks. Even if you log out after two or three minutes, you'll be able to make lots of progress through a well-thought-out daily routine.
Beyond the basic strategy of logging in every day, you'll want to be sure to check out every event island that's available. You don't necessarily need to get everything on every island, but it's definitely worth at least visiting the island and picking up any free gifts that you find. Ideally, you'll make a bit of progress through each island to get more rewards than this, but picking up the free stuff near the entrance is a good first step.
Family Island has a lot of resources hidden in out-of-the-way places. If you're new, it's easy to miss the importance of sakura trees. These trees have chests hidden under them, meaning that cutting them down should be of the utmost priority.
Frustratingly, you've got limited inventory space in Family Island. While it can be tempting to drop all of your basic materials, don't drop clovers, shells, or sand. When you do have to offload stuff for space, be sure to do some thinking about what you'll need to harvest to build your next buildings or tools. It's often helpful to look at a wiki or another community site to plan. With that in mind, offload low-value resources that you only have a few of in order to make space in your bags.
If you're looking for a specific resource, the fastest way to find it is to open your bags, find the resource, and then hit the magnifying glass icon. This will move your camera directly to the closest instance of that resource in the game world. This is perfect for finding animals that have wandered away on your home island, since you can track chickens by their eggs.
