If you've ever wanted to engineer the perfect disease or learn more about what makes some pandemics deadlier than others, Plague Inc has got your back. Evolve your contagion to infect the world!
Plague Inc is a game that's all about making a deadly virus (or other contagion) and slowly evolving it to spread and infect people all around the world. At the start of the game, your virus will infect just a few people in one corner of the world. By making choices and spending your evolution points wisely, you can make your virus spread faster, cause all sorts of symptoms, and become resistant to medicine.
While recent events have made Plague Inc more relevant than ever, the game has been around since at least 2012. Plague Inc was heavily inspired by an old-school flash game called Pandemic 2, which was enjoyed by players as early as 2008. In fact, it's likely that many of the disease control specialists that have helped to curb and control recent pandemics were inspired by earlier versions of Plague Inc.
Deadly Fun
In many ways, Plague Inc is like the ultimate autobattler. Your goal in the game is to infect people, gain evolution points, and spend those to make your disease more infectious, resilient, and deadly. The plethora of options and varied strategies involved in the game make each choice feel like it matters, making the game incredibly fun and engaging.
While the idea of wiping out humanity with a virus is grim on the surface, Plague Inc does a good job of respecting the seriousness of the idea without rubbing your face in it. Infections are represented as dots on a map, while information trickles in via text-based headlines. This helps keep things imaginary and impersonal, allowing you to have fun while you try to earn a high score.
Real Ideas
Plague Inc isn't 100% scientifically accurate, but most of its ideas are grounded in real-world principles. Your disease can be curbed by hand washing, doctors, and medicine, and the tactics and ideas that you can employ to get around those concepts are the same ones that real diseases use in real-life.
One of the most interesting concepts that Plague Inc gets right is the concept of transmission vectors. When your disease is first starting out, you'll have to choose how your disease is transmitted from person to person. Each choice gives you different likelihoods of moving from person to person and different methods of traveling across national borders. As your disease levels up, you'll be able to add more transmission vectors and massively increase your infection rate.
Another interesting concept is the way humanity reacts to your virus. Keep your virus relatively benign, and scientists all over the world will do very little to stop the spread of your disease. Make it incredibly deadly, and scientists will rush to find a cure. This gives you a great look at the perspective of infectious disease specialists and can help explain why things like the common cold continue to exist in this age of technology.
Options to Explore
Plague Inc's varied options and multiple difficulty levels give the game lots of replay-ability. You'll probably want to play on an easier mode to get your feet wet, then you'll want to play the game again on a harder mode to test out the things you've learned. With lots of unusual transmission vectors (like bees) and odd symptoms, the game presents a fun sandbox to play around in. What happens if you start out in Madagasgar with a super deadly virus? Can you still infect the world? Answering these questions will test your strategy skills and give you hours of fun.
Perhaps most importantly, Plague Inc plays great on mobile. The game's incredibly simple graphics and methodical, cerebral gameplay make it perfect for phones. There's not a lot of twitch action, either. This means that you can play it in between other things while you're on the go and put your phone down for a few minutes without losing a lot of progress in a super serious game.

How To Play

Plague Inc is a game that's all about learning and experimenting. This means that you shouldn't feel the need to wipe out the world on your very first run. Instead, pay attention to how the world responds to your pathogen and what your problem spots were. On your next run, try modifying your strategies to cover your weaknesses!
If you'd rather lean on the collective wisdom of the internet, experienced players suggest starting in Greenland or Madagascar. These isolated countries can be incredibly to hard to infect later in the game, especially if they close their ports. Starting out in one of them makes the endgame a lot easier. You'll still have to infect the other one, but it's a lot easier when you have one problem country instead of two.
The next thing to think about is deadliness. The easiest way to play Plague Inc is to make your disease as benign as possible until you've maxed out your infectiousness. In other words, try not to kill anyone until you've got every country in the world infected and your disease is spreading like crazy. This will help prevent scientists from gathering the funding to research a cure before its too late.
Finally, remember that upgrades get more expensive as the game goes on. This means you'll want to get your big upgrades early, especially when it comes to spreading your disease and improving its resilience. Plan out your route early on and then stick to it as best you can. Spending extra points on ful upgrades will make the rest of the game take longer, so avoid getting points that you don't need.
