What if you could put anything you wanted into a video game? Scribblenauts Remix does its best to deliver on that promise. Make giant ninjas fight armies of tanks, aliens, and devils and pull all sorts of crazy gizmos out of nowhere to solve puzzles.
Scribblenauts Remix is a 2D puzzle game with cartoonish graphics. You view the field with a side-view similar to Mario and control a boy with a hat in his quest to retrieve stars. In order to get these stars, you'll have to progress through levels and solve various puzzles.
Scribblenauts' big draw is the way that you solve puzzles. At any point in the game, you can pop open a typing interface, type in some words, and spawn something on the screen. The words you type closely control what spawns. Type “tank” and you get a tracked military vehicle with a gun turret. Type “tiny tank” and you get a small version of the same military vehicle. The only limit is your imagination – and the game's list of words.
Scribblenauts has been around for a while. Scribblenauts Remix is a polished, abbreviated version of the best levels of the first two Scribblenauts games. Many long platforming sections have been taken out and most of the more egregious bugs have been fixed.
Scribblenauts Remix is a very old game. It was first released in 2011. This means that it's got some outdated references and some of the items you spawn might not meet your modern standards. On the other hand, it means that the game runs very well on older devices. You won't need to get the latest phone to get great frame rates in Scribblenauts Remix.
The biggest criticism levied against Scribblenauts Remix (and the other Scribblenauts games) is that the game loses its magic as soon as you disbelieve its premise. If you believe that the game lets you spawn anything you type, it's a wonderful experience that's incredibly fun to play. If you believe that the game lets you spawn anything from its built-in list of words, it's a lot less fun. Gameplay quickly devolves into finding which of the game's defined objects is best for your task, typing in that word, and moving on.
So why is this static list of words a problem? For one, Scribblenauts handles synonyms in the laziest way possible. There's not a lot of difference between a “harrier” and an “eagle,” for example, and “tank” and “apc” spawn the same vehicle. These distinctions might not seem like a big deal to you, but it means that anything you're interested in will be hard to spawn in a game. The more you know about a topic, the more likely you are to use words and terms that have precise meanings that the game doesn't understand. Or, to put it a different way, the things you're most interested in spawning and interacting with probably won't work right.
The more you play Scribblenauts, the more luster it loses. Looking up the list of words even once will forever tarnish the game's magic, and playing the game long enough to memorize some terms will ruin it even further. Messing around for a few minutes in Scribblenauts is super fun. Experimenting with the system for the first few minutes is great. Once you've figured things out, however, you'll probably grow bored with the game and put it down.
Overall, given the incredibly low price tag, Scribblenauts Remix is probably worth picking up. Don't expect to spend a lot of time in the game, however, and be wary of in-app purchases. Scribblenauts Remix is lots of fun to mess around with, but it's not a game you're likely to be playing next month.

How To Play

Scribblenauts Remix is a game about creativity. Looking up any sort of directed help can very quickly suck the fun out of the game. Nevertheless, if you're stuck, here are a few items that you can use to get yourself out of any sticky situation.
First, consider looking up a full list of words the game recognizes. Anything that's sorted by usefulness or anything that tries to only show powerful items (like the list below) will potentially make the game less fun by pointing you at the good stuff first. Discovering what various things do from a list with no comments is an enjoyable task on its own, even if it doesn't help you progress through your puzzle very quickly.
If you're not willing to do that, here are some of the best things to spawn in various situations.
INVINCIBILITY CLOAK – this is a garment that prevents you from taking any damage. Put it on and take your time, even if enemies are attacking you.
INVISIBILITY CLOAK – like the cloak above, this is great for buying time. Instead of making you invulnerable, however, this will make enemies ignore you.
POCKET KNIFE – in many situations, the simplest weapons do the best job. It's tempting to spawn nukes or rocket launchers, but the pocket knife tends to solve problems in a more managable way.
CHI, REINDEER, PEGASUS – these flying creatures give you speedy options to traverse terrain.
SHRINK RAY, FREEZE RAY – both of these guns let you interact with your problems in a less violent way. Make things small or turn them to ice.
EXPLODING BARREL – if you want to blow something up, spawn one of these and drop it on the thing you want to explode
Here are a few modifiers you can use with the above commands to make them more potent.
SUPERSONIC – add this modifier to vehicles to make them really fast
DEADLY – add this modifier to weapons to make them kill in one hit. Remember the pocket knife from above? This is why it's so potent.
HYPOTNIZING – add this to items to make them charm enemies. Charmed enemies will follow hypnotizing items, so you can quickly clear out a whole section of the level with this modifier.
